Description
The Dead Horse Gap Walking Track, a 5km Grade 4 trail in Kosciuszko National Park, is undergoing crucial upgrades to its lower sub-alpine section, led by TRC Trails. With expertise in trail design and construction, we are delivering 1.5km of gravel paths, 200m of stone paving, new timber steps, and improved drainage infrastructure, ensuring the track meets the highest safety and durability standards.
The project also includes the rehabilitation of unauthorized track alignments while carefully preserving the sensitive alpine environment.
Leveraging innovative approaches, remote access capabilities, and helicopter support for material transport, TRC Trails continues to deliver sustainable and high-quality outcomes that enhance the visitor experience and respect the natural surroundings.
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS
Remote Location & Limited Access
Challenge: Vehicle access is restricted, requiring helicopter transport for materials and equipment.
Solution: TRC Trails will coordinate precise logistics, using helicopter sling loading to efficiently transport materials.
Environmental Sensitivity
Challenge: The track passes through fragile alpine ecosystems, requiring strict environmental protection.
Solution: Our team will implement erosion control measures, follow best-practice rehabilitation techniques, and work within designated footprints to minimize disturbance.
Extreme Weather Conditions
Challenge: High-altitude conditions bring unpredictable weather, affecting construction schedules.
Solution: Work will be planned around seasonal conditions, with contingency strategies in place to adapt to changing weather patterns.
Durability & Long-Term Maintenance
Challenge: High visitor traffic and harsh alpine conditions require a robust, low-maintenance trail.
Solution: We will use high-quality materials such as durable stone paving and timber steps, alongside advanced drainage solutions to ensure long-term sustainability.
With a strong track record in delivering high-quality trail infrastructure in remote and challenging environments, TRC Trails is committed to ensuring the Dead Horse Gap upgrades are completed to the highest standards, enhancing accessibility while preserving the unique alpine landscape.
